The importance of the second referee (R2)

Why am I doing this?

In most tournaments, teams are required to provide second referees as part of their work team duties. 

The second referee is a very important part of the officiating team.  A good second referee is often the difference between a smooth match and a slow, sloppy match where neither team comes away with a good experience.

How can a bad second referee turn a match into a disaster? Easily!

• R2's not paying attention - R2 must be aware of what's going on in order to do his job.
• R2's not understanding their job - R2 must understand what is her job.  Just as importantly,  R2 must understand what isn't her job.
• R2's not understanding the rules - How can you make calls confidently if you don't know what you're supposed to call?

In this clinic you will learn both the rules and duties of the R2.  The rest is up to you!

Remember this simple rule...

Work as a second referee the same way you want the second referee to perform when you're playing.

Keep this rule in mind as you read the rest of the clinic, and come to the court confident in your ability to do your job as R2.
