Year’s Significant Changes
Rule 11.1.2
USAV will no longer test the rule which allows players to pass hand(s) beyond the plane of the net, contacting the ball over the opponent’s court, and directing the ball back into the player’s own playing space.
So what?
This means that a player cannot initial contact with the ball while any part of their hand is above the opponent’s court. Previously, a setter could reach into the opponent’s space to retrieve a pass as long as any part of the ball was still in the plane of the net. Now it is a violation to place a hand above the opponent’s court to go get the ball. It is also a violation to attack an overpass with any part of you hand over the opponent’s space.
Important things to remember...
This does not apply to blocking an opponents attack.
The position of the hands is only judged when the ball is first contacted.
A player is still allowed to follow through above the opponent’s court after
they contact the ball.
This call is only made by the first referee
