Why I am passionate about being a financial adviser

Alice Harmer explains why she finds her financial adviser role at Schroders Personal Wealth so fulfilling

Being a financial adviser at Schroders Personal Wealth isn’t just a job for me: it’s a vocation. Every day I have the privilege of connecting with a diverse range of people, each with their own unique stories, dreams and financial goals. My role extends far beyond numbers and spreadsheets: it’s about guiding my clients towards financial confidence and peace of mind.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my job is cultivating meaningful relationships with my clients. Each client brings their own background and aspirations, which makes my work endlessly fascinating. Getting to know people on a personal level not only makes my job more enjoyable: it allows me to tailor my advice to suit their needs and circumstances.

Trust is the foundation of my client relationships, and transparency is key to maintaining that trust. As a financial adviser, I take pride in acting as a kind of translator, breaking down complex concepts to make financial planning and investing more accessible.

Whether clarifying the difference between stocks and bonds or explaining the importance of portfolio diversification, my aim is to empower my clients with the knowledge they need to make informed financial decisions. I strive to create a supportive environment where people feel comfortable discussing their anxieties and aspirations. In this way they understand I’m not just monitoring their investments: I’m aiming to safeguard their financial future.

Making a positive impact

However, my job isn’t only about building relationships. It’s also about making a tangible difference to people’s lives. Money can be a source of anxiety for many of us, so my goal is to alleviate some of this stress. That could be through developing a comprehensive financial plan, helping clients navigate a major life transition, or simply offering a reassuring ear during turbulent times. I enjoy making a positive impact on my clients’ lives through these activities.

During periods of financial prosperity, I take pride in helping my clients seize opportunities to make the most of their resources and in helping them achieve their goals. Some of the best moments come when my clients realise that they can afford a luxury they once thought was out of reach, perhaps a faraway holiday or a new sportscar. Such moments are gratifying reminders of the positive impacts of my work.

Offering support through life’s uncertainties

While the good times are rewarding, a different type of satisfaction comes from guiding my clients through moments of uncertainty or change. Just as in my own life, where I’ve navigated the joys and challenges of parenting a daughter with additional needs, I understand the importance of planning for life’s uncertainties.

It’s during these times that my role as a financial adviser truly makes a difference. I’m gratified to see the confidence my clients gain as they navigate through various transitions. It could be through adapting their financial plans to welcome a new family member, overcoming the loss of a loved one, or adjusting their goals to accommodate an unexpected event. I take a personal approach with each client, recognising that life’s changes are part of the journey but, with support, we can navigate them with confidence.

Greater flexibility, better results

My role isn’t solely about providing advice; it’s also about how I deliver it. Gone are the days of rigid face-to-face meetings. At Schroders Personal Wealth (SPW), we prioritise accessibility and flexibility. We embrace various communication channels, from video calls to evening consultations, to ensure our clients receive the assistance they need, when they need it. I can focus squarely on achieving results, without an inflexible schedule getting in the way.

In finance, change is constant, with new products, regulations and market trends appearing all the time. As a financial adviser, I thrive on staying ahead. That could be through attending conferences, pursuing certifications or staying informed through reading and research. I’ve embraced lifelong learning to ensure my clients receive the best advice in varying economic conditions.

SPW understands my job isn’t just about numbers: it’s about people. It’s a pleasure to help clients achieve their goals, knowing that my guidance contributes to their financial wellbeing and peace of mind.
