Supporting the Armed Forces this November
Reaffirming SPW's commitment to the Armed Forces community this Remembrance Day. Discover how we support veterans and their families through the Armed Forces Covenant, volunteering and fundraising with initiatives like Walking Home for Christmas.
Reaffirming our commitment to supporting the Armed Forces
Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day are poignant occasions for our nation to honour the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community, and all those who have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.
As proud members of the Armed Forces Covenant, we are dedicated to supporting those who serve, those who have served, and their families. Our commitment is reflected in a range of initiatives, such as fundraising and volunteering.
This November, as the world marks Remembrance Day, we reaffirm our ongoing support for the Armed Forces community and those that stand beside them.

Supporting London Poppy Day
On 30 October, one of our colleagues, Jack Barker, volunteered at this year’s London Poppy Day - the Royal British Legion’s flagship fundraising event for the annual Poppy Appeal.
The day involves a large presence of volunteers and service members holding collections across train and tube stations, as well as corporate offices, throughout the city.
I volunteered to help collect after the morning rush hour at Liverpool Street Station. I was really surprised at the generosity of the public and how much interest there was, particularly from younger people. It was also great to meet the other volunteers from different backgrounds which made the whole event have a real community feel. As a serving Army Reservist, supporting the appeal is important to me. Using one of my SPW volunteering days for this was a perfect fit - and a reflection of our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant.”

Our commitment: The Armed Forces Covenant
In 2021, we signed the Armed Forces Covenant, and in 2023, we were delighted to achieve the Gold Award under its Employer Recognition Scheme. The Covenant represents the nation’s promise to those who protect us with honour, courage, and commitment. It is a pledge that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, will be treated with fairness and respect in our communities, economy, and society.
Championing the Armed Forces Community
Our Armed Forces colleague network has played a vital role in championing our commitment to being a forces-friendly employer. Throughout the year, the network has organised and supported a variety of activities.
Next month, we’re once again taking part in the ‘Walking Home for Christmas’ charity walk, which raises funds for Walking With The Wounded. This event has become a tradition at SPW, and is always a highlight in the calendar, with colleagues around the country participating enthusiastically for the past few years.
Last year, around 70 SPW colleagues took part, raising over £6,700 (including matched giving from SPW) - a fantastic achievement! This year, we’re aiming even higher. Stay tuned for updates as we strive to make an even greater impact.
‘Walking With The Wounded’, are a leading military charity helping to get those who have served and their families back on their feet. Whether mentally, socially or physically wounded, the charity helps deliver the care and support veterans need and empower those struggling after military service, reigniting their sense of purpose, enabling them to make a positive contribution to their communities and to lead independent lives
